Biometric Authentication That Links the Real World to the Internet

Kuda: While providing support for startup companies, I came to feel deeply that an authentication method using a scheme other than the traditional ID and password would be indispensable for linking the “real world” to the Internet. I felt that the field of biometric authentication that makes impersonation impossible would grow over the next 10 to 20 years.

Our research in the field of biometric authentication led to the following discovery. In Japan, fingerprints are used to make criminal investigations, and I noticed that weight is placed on a one-to-one comparison.

When using biometric authentication for payments and identification, a technology that makes it possible to instantaneously search vast amounts of data, as opposed to conducting one-to-one comparisons, is required. Here, we applied image analysis technology used for automated driving to the mapping of images, and transformed this data into efficiently stored, irreversible data units. At the same time, methods to efficiently store data were examined via machine learning, and we succeeded in developing an algorithm to quickly search fingerprints using a system based on one-to-mass comparison, not one-to-one comparison.
